Hi Dana (and all)

If you're contacting the press don't forget to contact TV Week in Sydney ph.
(02) 9464 3300. Their articles are usually dross but they might think The
Way worthy of a few column inches.

I've done much the same down here in Melbourne. If anyone in town knows
someone without internet access tell them they can sign the petition I've
left with the staff of Minotaur Books in Bourke st. I'll collect it in a few
weeks and send it over the Pacific.

You seem to have covered the SF shop in Briabane. Is there anyone reading
this who is in Sydney who could lodge forms at Galaxy Bookshop?

Courage everyone. Keep your chin up. I was reading a little of Henry V last
night (for another reason) and I was encouraged by this excerpt you might
like to share. I'm not usually one to go charging to bookshops haranguing
folk to sing petitions but I was so irritated by this whole business I took
a leaf from Xena's book (or should that be Gabby's book?) and did something.

Krishna may do it for Hindu's but I find Shakespeare more my cup of tea.

Just one brief correction about a mistake I made too initially.
Contrary to popular belief and what the media implied, Falwell didn't
make the comment about Tinky-Winky. It was published in the National
Liberty Journal, of which he is the publisher. It was actually written
by JM Smith. The article can be found here:
http://www.liberty.edu/chancellor/nlj/feb99/politics2.htm
I know this is a small point, but accuracy is important since it was
assumptions others made about X:WP that got us into this mess. I
thought the rest of the letter was really good.

The Xena articles at VNN (Vaishnava News Network)
are getting interesting. The last bunch have been
very critical of the Hindu protest. Some have
suggested that Krishna himself engineered his own
portrayal in a show that reaches millions, only
to have his plans frustrated by his devotees.

Here's the latest:

20 Apr 1999

From: "Becky Calvert" <lostkiwi@worldnet.att.net>

Good Morning everyone!!!!

I have 2 pieces of news to deliver to you. The first is a change of one of
the contact individuals at SudiosUSA. Instead of attempting to contact Mr.
Ken Soloman, you may now send correspondences, mail, ect. to Mr. Barry
Baker. The address and other contact information is exactly the same.

The second piece of news this morning is the petition count.
As of 0630 EDT 20 Apr we have 800 additional names (50 more than last nite)
and grand total of 3250 on the petition.

ONLY 50 names???????? Come on y'all. I know we can do allot better than
that!!!
We can't get apathetic now!!!! Things are slowly turning to our favor!!
Let's Go!! Let's do it for all those that worked so hard on the episode.
Let's do it because we will not except censorship or the promotion of
homophobia from small fundamentalists groups.
LET'S DO IT "BECAUSE IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO--IT IS FOR THE GREATER
GOOD"!!

and now the obligatory protest note:
And of course:
If you haven't done so already, please take a moment to sign the online
petition at:

http://starpoet.com/names.html

You will be asked for your name and e-mail address.
Your street address is optional but encouraged.
None of your information will be available to the
public. It will be collected and a hard copy
will be sent to StudiosUSA.

BATTLE ON!!!!!!!

From: Simon Bailey <stb@xalanth.demon.co.uk>

What I would like to ask is how can an individual in America
demand that an episode can't be seen by people in Britain (or Germany,
or Australia...)? It should be the official body responsible, if there
is one, to decide whether 'The Way', or any other TV show is fit for
transmission.

I am surprised that their name hasn't been floated about, but
the main regulatory body in the UK for programmes on channels other than
those run by the BBC (Xena appears on Channel 5 and Sky One), is The
Independent Television Commission (ITC). The ITC will deal with
complaints concerning programmes and advertisements. Their address is

The Independent Television Commission,
33 Foley Street,
LONDON,
W1P 7LB
Tel: (0171) 255 3000

You can also try the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) who deal
with matters of sex, violence, taste and decency in broadcast. Their
address is:

The Broadcasting Standards Commission,
7, The Sanctuary,
LONDON,
SW1P 3JS
Tel: (0171) 233 0544

I would think the ITC are the more appropriate body.

Australian Gay, lesbian, Bi and Transgender Mardi Gras, etc.

Channel ten have now put up there website which has a section where you are
able to provide them with feedback about the website, technical stuff and
their programmes. Obviously we are concerned with the third option. I sent
an e mail explaining our counter protest etc etc. If there are enough
people who contact them maybe they might contact STUDIO WUS, I mean studio
USA to reconsider their decision.
Go to http://www.ten.com.au/feedback.asp if you would like to contact them.

It would be nice if the xena powers that be would acknowledge the many
asses we are busting. An e mail would be nice. Sheesh, it's not that hard.
I'm completely computer illiterate and even I can do it!!!! :) We are
defending them after all. I am disappointed that they gave up so easily.
Xena wouldn't. And I am glad to say that neither will we.
Keep battling on Sarah, fellow xena person and other xena people who read
this!!!!!!

Hi folks,

Just called SKY to see what the ep for this week was as they have been
showing a promo for '....Miss Amphipolis'... it is as should be 'Between the
Lines' so while talking to the very nice guy I asked him what the following
weeks ep was...
and he said.. 'The Plays the Thing'.. that they had received a memo telling
them that the episode had been pulled from worldwide airing shedules. He
apologised to all the fans of the show but there was nothing they could do
about it at this time.

Anyone wanting to call them about it can get them at SKY Viewers enquiries..
0171 705 3000

For any UK fans who have VCR's that can play NTSC I will be getting the tape
of the episode in the next week hopefully.. I can't copy it but anyone who
would like to see it is welcome to borrow it.

Sorry folks :(

If anyone needs a tape of The Way, you can get one through
the World Vaisnava Association. Yep, they're *selling*
the tape. Ten bucks.

http://www.vnn.org/usa/US9903/US03-3225.html

I have been updating my Protest Censorship page almost
hourly. There are new links to the Entertainment Media
(let's get ET on this) and the Gay and Lesbian Press.

I also have a link to Rooks' page of protest graphics.
The blue ribbon is now a symbol of the protest against
censorship of The Way. Grab one for your website here:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Oracle/4865/censorship_images.html

Maybe we should think about mainstream news media,
like 60 Minutes, 20/20, Dateline, USA Today. Does
anyone have their contact information?

My protest page is at:

http://www.tsoft.com/~cmwilson/ProtestCensorship.html

You can do a lot of protesting with very little effort
from this page. Click on e-mail addresses to send
e-mail. Click on links to websites to fill out
feedback forms. For those with more time, there are
snail mail addresses, but protesting just can't get
any easier than this. Please take a few minutes to
send a note to an affiliate or phone the program
manager of your local affiliate.

There are reports that the affiliates are denying that
they pressured the studio. Some of them probably
haven't, but if they say that, ask them to contact the
studio and lend their support to the voices of the fans
who want to see The Way returned to syndication. If
you ask them to do something, they'll have to give you
an answer.

Feel free to post this message to other lists and
newsgroups.

Does anybody know if the WB was part of the stations that caused the ep to be
pulled? I've emailed the stations in New York and Philly (i watch both) so
hopefully I'll get some answers soon.
The station in New York is the flagship, so if you watch any WB network, i
think you should write to them.
the address is:
WB11
220 East 42nd St.
New York, NY 10017
(212)949-1100
www.wpix.com
Another idea i had was that we could set up a petition and have people sign it
- maybe we could set it up on a website - and then we could send the petition
to all of the stations involved.
oh, and i have a copy of the ep if anybody wants me to make a copy for them.
Battle On!!!!

It seems that simply writing to the studios may be supportive, it may not be
help in getting your local station to bring back the episode. We must do
what the protesters have done and write to our local stations. Help us
become a voice by finding out any contact information on your local station
and either send the information to the list or myself, so I can compile them
and repost them here.

PLEASE when you write to them, do not send hate mail! Write to them in a
civilized and supportive manner. A good example of the style would be the
one Lynne wrote to Renaissance shown at the bottom of this email.

<< Well said Lynne... Okie now. anyone know of some helpful emails,
addresses, faxes, to RenPic, Universal, or any other Xena associated
group or person(s) so we can get these letters out there? >>

Yes, and from Xenamedia itself! Here are the following fax numbers and snail
mail addresses (thanks Dan!)

Pacific Reniassance Pictures: 011 649 834-7275 (New Zealand fax number)

Xena Fax: 818-866-0223

Universal Studios Fax: 818-866-1402

The EMail address to Pac Ren is: smay@clear.net.nz.

"Smay" is Sue May, to whom the original note of protest was sent and
apparently, she works for PacRen in NZ. Her snail mail address is:

Sue May
Pacific Renaissance Pictures Ltd
PO Box 90409
Aukland, NZ

These are the same numbers that the Hindus were pushing to get the episode
pulled. Still, contacting your affiliates would be best...but I think it'd
be great to write or fax to RenPic to express your SUPPORT for the show and
its producers.
